Alt text and linked images
Jared Smith explains the importance of alt text for images that are links. This is yet another compelling argument for not ditching alt text as a requirement of HTML5.
Forcing developers to think about alt text ensures that it can never be ignored if you want your pages to validate. A null value is sometimes appropriate, but this should be a conscious choice on the part of the developer.
